What are mineral oils?
Mineral oil is a colorless, transparent oil derived from the purification of crude oil. It consists of saturated hydrocarbons predominantly and has numerous cosmetic, drug, and industrial lubricant applications. Mineral oil, because of its inert nature, finds application as a moisturizer in cosmetic preparations in order not to let the moisture of the skin evaporate. It can be applied in medicines either as a purgative or as ointment base. It still has limited uses in food due to health reasons. Mineral oil is typically valued for its adaptability and stability across numerous industries.
Where do they come from?
Mineral oil results from a refining procedure involving purification and distillation from crude oil. The crude oil undergoes heating such that its elements are sorted by their boiling points. The lighter elements are distilled and further processed for the removal of impurities such as the presence of sulphur and aromatic hydrocarbons. It takes the shape of a colorless and odourless oil that primarily comprises saturated hydrocarbons. Mineral oil also occurs naturally, such as from the distillation of shale or coal of a particular composition. Its affordability and abundance have made most of these businesses like it.
What are they used for?
The most prominent use of mineral oil in cosmetics is as a moisturizer and emollient. Mineral oil forms a protective layer on the surface of the skin, locking in moisture and maintaining skin hydration. It works particularly for dry skin as well as for sensitive skin. Mineral oil also softens the texture of cream and lotion and makes them silky and smoother. It also gets blended with makeup for improved spreading and application. Mineral oil, being inert, will not easily induce any kind of allergy and hence finds wide application in most cosmetic skin products.
Why are they questioned?
Mineral oil has been questioned and criticized on a number of fronts. One of them pertains to its being a petroleum derivative, where some consumers prefer using natural products. There are also concerns that it clogs pores and deepens acne and skin conditions in some. Some studies indicate that it results in skin barrier disturbance when applied over the long term. There are also debates regarding the safety of mineral oil in cosmetics due to the refining process that it gets and also due to the possibility of impurities. All these are the reasons why the use of mineral oil in skincare products remains controversial.
How do we use them?
Depending on the application of mineral oil, the substance can be recycled in a variety of uses. It will usually be applied topically on the skin as a moisturizer or emollient, where it retains moisture and guards the skin surface. As a hair treatment, mineral oil will add sheen and defrizz the hair. Industrially, mineral oil will be a machine lubricant or used as a coolant in the course of making products. When using mineral oil for cooking purposes, as a laxative, special precautions must be followed to maintain ongoing effectiveness and for safety. Follow the label.
