These are plant extracts that are obtained by different methods, such as steam distillation or cold pressing. The original fragrance and medicinal content of the plant that they are derived from remain stored in them. Mostly applied in aromatherapy, they have the ability of bringing about body and mind wellness. Every oil has unique characteristics; lavender has relaxing characteristics while peppermint has stimulating and invigorating characteristics. Either they are applied through diffusers, applied on the body through bath products, or blended with carrier oils for topical application. However, they must be applied with care because they are potent and may be irritating on the skin if not applied in a suitable proportion.



Where do they come from?

These essential oils are derived from plant parts like leaves, flowers, stems, seeds, and roots. The extraction process may be carried out with steam distillation, cold press, or solvent. Lavender oil, for instance, is derived from the flower, whereas citrus essential oils like lemon and orange are yield through the process of their peels by cold pressing. Every plant species has its unique chemical composition that provides essential oil with its specific scent and medicinal nature. Quality of essential oil will vary on the basis of plant developmental environment, harvesting, and extraction methods.



Why are they used?

Essential oils are increasingly utilized due to their natural origin and benefits. They may add fragrance to products, providing a sensorical pleasant experience. Moreover, most of the essential oils possess therapeutic benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects, which assist in maintaining the health of the skin. For example, tea tree oil treats acne, and rose oil is applied for moisturizing and rejuvenating the skin. Why are they being questioned?

Essential oils have not been taken with as much enthusiasm due to a series of reasons. One of the major reasons includes the lack of regulation in the industry, thus varying quality and purities. Some of them are blended with artificial chemicals or contain additives, misleading consumers about their efficacy. Additionally, while most essential oils are sold based on their medicinal uses, there isn't much scientific evidence for such uses. Misuse of essential oils or their improper application is likely to have deleterious effects, such as skin irritations or allergic reactions. Consumers must thus do their research and buy quality authentic brands when using essential oils.

For their healing effect, essential oils are added into skin care products for anti-aging, moisturizing, and treating acne. For fragrance, essential oils are used in lieu of artificial fragrance. Rosemary and lavender for hair care may be used for maintaining scalp health and hair. For bath products like bath oils and bath salts, they are widely used for creating a soothing and perfumed bathing experience. Safe application requires proper formulation and dilution.
